DMPLAS Soft Font Collection
by Bob Ostrander
and Gary Elfring
Additional functionality for DMPLAS
Dot Matrix Printer to Laser Printer conversion
Introduction
------------
This optional add-on package to DMPLAS contains:
12 COsssfPN.SFP fixed-width Courier LaserJet fonts
12 CPsssfPN.SFP proportional Courier LaserJet fonts
DOWNLOAD.EXE Font download program
DOWNLOAD.DOC
and other ancillary files.
If you have received this package without DMPLAS go back to the source
and ask for the DMPLAS base package also or call Software Co-op at
317-856-6052.
Purpose
-------
DMPLAS converts IBM/Epson FX escape sequences to the HP LaserJet "PCL"
language. By using DMPLAS you can produce accurate representations of
your favorite reports or word processor text on your new, quick, quiet
laser printer without having to change configurations or software.
(DMPLAS will also convert IBM/Epson FX graphics to HP LaserJet but
this add-on package is not involved at all.)
Since most laser printers do not have a full range of Courier fonts
built-in, the fonts included here may give you a more accurate
representation of your Epson output than with the native built-in fonts
alone. We suggest that you experiment with DMPLAS to see which fonts
included here will be useful.
Fonts
-----
The 24 font names are formatted in HP Softfont format

CO = Courier fixed width ---------------------- V |

100 = 10 pt (12 characters per inch) |
120 = 12 pt (10 characters per inch) |

R = Normal (Roman) typeface -------------------------
I = Italic typeface
B = Bold "Roman" typeface
X = Bold Italic typeface
This may be the first time you've contemplated an Italic or Proportional
Courier typeface but that's what the laser printer needs to successfully
emulate the Epson FX.
The standard DMPLAS translation of dot-matrix pitch control commands is
follows:
PICA becomes 10 cpi / 12 pt
ELITE becomes 12 cpi / 10 pt
CONDENSED becomes 16.6 cpi / 8 pt
Note that the Proportional typefaces are in reality a square-serif type
style called Serifa - very close to Rockwell. This was chosen because it
goes nicely with Courier and is not such a shock to the eye as a Times
Roman or Helvetica would be. Note also that once downloaded to your
laser printer it will think that it has a proportional Courier font.
This is done this way so that when your program (via DMPLAS) asks for a
proportional font it will find this font rather than a Times Roman,
Helvetica, or other proportional font that your laser printer may also
have loaded in memory.
Laser Printer Basics
--------------------
Laser printers have some fonts built into memory, others can be added
via plug-in cartridges or by downloadable soft fonts. When selecting
which font to use, the logic of the laser printer will first select
downloaded soft fonts, then cartridge and finally native fonts.
Downloaded fonts reside in the printer's memory, unfortunately this is
limited. The HP LaserJet II, for instance, normally comes with just 512K
of internal memory. There are 602k of fonts in this package so you
cannot use them all if you have a bare Series II printer. Even with a
megabyte of memory you probably won't want to use up more than half of
your memory to hold these fonts.
Consider that the laser printer's memory is also used to hold graphics
for printing. A full 8.5" X 11" page of 300dpi graphics easily requires
600k of memory for itself. If you have taken too much for soft fonts an
error results. To avoid this annoyance we suggest that you use these
fonts sparingly. See the file DOWNLOAD.DOC for more information.
Which Fonts to Download
-----------------------
The command COPY DLFONTS.PRN PRN will show you what fonts your laser
printer will use and give you suggestions about what fonts from this
package you may want to use.
Failing this, suggested for normal use are
CO100RPN.SFP 12 cpi normal
CO100IPN.SFP 12 cpi italic
CO100BPN.SFP 12 cpi bold
CO120IPN.SFP 10 cpi italic
CO120XPN.SFP 10 cpi italic bold
CP120RPN.SFP 10 cpi normal proportional
CP120IPN.SFP 10 cpi italic proportional
CO080RPN.SFP 16.6 cpi normal
You may want to use others to gain more accurate representations in
special cases.
The command above as well as DMPLAS /P DLTEST-1.PRN and
DMPLAS /P DLTEST-2.PRN will show you what your laser printer can
accomplish without these fonts. It is then up to you to pick which fonts
will enhance your output.
The file DMPLASDL.LST has been included here for your convenience. It is
for use with DOWNLOAD. The command DOWNLOAD @DMPLASDL.LST 1001
will cause all of the fonts to be installed in your laser printer.
